P90x DVD Set – How Can it Help You?

December 25th, 2011

The world is progressing at a very rapid pace. Technology that was hard to imagine even a decade ago, is easily attainable and affordable today. Thanks to the advancement of science and technology in every field, human race is able to lead luxurious lives. Like everything else, luxury, too comes with a price tag. The price that you pay for this indulgence is lethargy and complacence. Problems such as obesity and spondylitis, to name a few, have gone up exponentially. In such a fast paced world, exercise has taken a back seat. But, the P90x DVD set promises to bring back the healthy you with a bang.

For starters, the P90x DVD set is a sequence of home videos intended to give you a 90 day rigorous home fitness regime. The brain child of the famous trainer, Tony Horton, this 13 set DVDs is turning out to be the most wanted fitness products of the day. The P90x fitness program can be carried out in the comfort of your homes with just a chair, dumbbells, push up stand, exercise mat and a resistance band. The DVDs include sweat inducing muscle pumping training that takes pride in giving you the best shape. The P90x DVD set concentrates on power training, cardio and stretching exercises and helps you to work on your strength, flexibility and cardiovascular function.

The best part about the P90x DVD set is that there are workouts for every part of the body: back, legs, chest, abs, shoulders and even the arms. The other highlights of the P90x program, apart from the workouts, is a detailed fitness guide, a dvd that shows how the system works and also a calendar to keep a tab on your progress. The bonus of this program is its diet guidebook. Since the workouts will leave you exhausted, the P90x will guide through that aspect as well. The three phases of the nutrition chart are fat shredder, energy booster and the endurance maximizer respectively.

The p90x dvd set is priced at around $39.8. Most critics and reviewers have given the program thumbs up and think it is value for money. They claim that it has quality content and does help in getting rid of excess fat. However, it does not happen overnight. The main disadvantage is the severity of the program. The workout schedule is quite strict and you need to be highly motivated throughout the 90 day period. If you are facing space constraint, then there may be difficulty in doing the workouts.

The O.C.: The Complete First Season

June 28th, 2011

The O.C. is much better than I expected it to be. I had been hearing so much about this show but was not really that interested in seeing it. I read the reviews here on amazon and saw nothing but positive reviews which of course made me curious to check it out. I ended up purchasing this first season and I have to say I was really pleased with how good the show is. I like the fact that the show is not just about kids in high school, but also their parents and family and how they all interact. The cast is really good and believable enough to either make you love them or hate them. The show is very emotional at times and it is very addicting. I think what scared me away before I ever saw an episode was that I figured The O.C. was just another show about rich kids in California like Beverly Hills 90210 and/or Melrose place. The show is so much more than those other shows and has just the right amount of drama mixed in with just the right amount of heart. I highly recommend The O.C. for anyone who likes must see TV. I can’t wait until season 2 comes out on DVD.

The Golden Girls – The Complete Sixth Season

June 26th, 2011

I have ALL seven seasons of the Golden Girls. Best investment I ever made. When there is nothing worth watching on TV (most of it’s not worth watching anymore), I insert a Golden Girl DVD and enjoy watching that wonderful ensemble of ladies do their stuff! I’ve seen them a hundred times, and still find myself laughing. I have also ordered other Wonderful TV shows of the past, and watch them, as well. There are very few TV shows today that I bother with. Most of them deal with getting others before they can get you, so called reality shows, and/or are just plain filthy. I am so thankful I can still access decent programs of the past, where the writing was actually done by thougtful, insightful, talented and intelligent people. Unlike today, where most of them seem to be thinking and living in the gutter.

Blue Planet: Seas of Life (Special Edition)

June 23rd, 2011

Blue Planet is a great educational and interesting video series. If you are interested in ocean animals, biology, or just like learning about new things in a fun way, this is for you. I personally really love marine life, so this was right up my alley. Each show is about 45 min. long and there are a couple of shows on each disk.

Every “episode” is just amazing and blows me away. Even though I have read many books on the subject, there is so much to know. The cinematography is great, it seems like the viewer is just swimming along and “happens” to run into whatever animal they are talking about, rather than the painstaking process I’m sure it took to find each one. You are shown many different types of animals from different areas of the ocean.

In short, this DVD set will not disappoint!

The Dead Zone (Special Collector’s Edition)

June 22nd, 2011

I loved this movie for a lot of reasons:

One, Christopher Walken gets to play a very sympathetic character and really makes it work. Even when Walken is playing a total maniac, you still like the guy.

Two, this is probably the best adaption of a Stephen King book to hit the screen. ‘SALEM’S LOT was a TV movie that looked like a TV movie, and THE SHINING was the best-looking but least-scariest horror film ever. The rest are just a mess. Ironically, the worst screenplay adaption was, in my opinion, done by Mr. King himself: PET SEMETARY was an ugly hack job of one of his finest novels!

Three, Director David Cronenberg did a great job directing (and probably restraining himself!). By having Johnny Smith’s visions hit him in violent jump-cuts instead of the dream-like pages of the novel, the movie really gives a visual edge to the dead zones.

Four, the rest of the cast is fun to watch, from Herbert Lom to Tom Skerritt to Anthony Zerbe.

And Five, the maniacal would-be president played by a frothing Martin Sheen is probably closer to his real personality than the one he plays on “The West Wing.”

Two and a Half Men: The Complete Second Season

June 21st, 2011

Comedy series collectors, our prayers were finally answered: The second season of “Two and a Half Men” is coming out, more than two and a half years after its season finale airing. Hey, two and a half years? I think this number is a coincidence with the series title…maybe this was made on purpose!

In a time where TV seasons – even the least successful ones – are released on DVD within six months or less from its finales, letting “Two and a Half Men” be out of the DVD market for such a long time was, at least, an odd attitude. Even more oddly is to figure that some other countries (like England) have already this set for sale for a while.

From the 24 episodes of this second season (which occasionally still airs on CW), there is no one of them I could call a lame one. As for the 4-DVD set, we can expect the obvious: more interviews, more deleted scenes, more episode commentaries and more outtakes. Based on what I’ve seen in the UK version, fun is more than guaranteed with this DVD-set.

Tell Me You Love Me – The Complete First Season

June 20th, 2011

I wish, sometimes, that the general populace of this United States were not so screwed up when it comes to sex. However, this is not the case and as a result of this slack-jawed, priggish mindset, the rest of us are robbed of one of the most intelligent, insightful programs this viewer has seen in some time.

Cynthia Mort has depicted a laser focused and thoughtful portrayal of intimacy in “Tell Me You Love Me”. She has stripped the inner workings of an intimate, sexual relationship bare with four couples in different stages of their lives. The effect is at once disturbing, hilarious, frightful, and hopeful as these adjectives are really the bones of any relationship. This is a series every person involved in an intimate, sexual relationship should watch more than once.

The cast is brilliant, if not to mention, courageous. Michelle Borth (who knew she was more than just a femme du jour?) and Luke Kirby portray the “new loves” preparing for their wedding day. Sonya Walger (Mort shows her genius in recognizing this woman’s talent) and Adam Scott play a childless couple struggling for a baby. Ally Walker, of “Profiler” fame (too long away from the view of the masses) and Tim DeKay of “Carnivale” are the married-for-years-with-kids scenario. Jane Alexander (formidable!) and David Selby (a far cry from “Dark Shadows’” Quentin Collins) play and older, mature couple. All of these actors bring precise candor to their portrayals provoking intense reactions from the watcher.

As you find yourself muttering under your breath, “You bitch!” or “You bastard!” you ultimately realize that you would be the ultimate hypocrite to even attempt to choose sides.

And, yes, they all have sex. It would be silly to present a discourse on intimacy in sexual relationships without the act of sex. So, get over it and watch this TV show!

Royal Pains: Season One

June 16th, 2011

My favorite things about this TV show: Paolo Costanza looking like a young shiny Jerry Seinfeld and being so charming; Reshma Shetty so cool looking, owning an English accent (which isn’t always pleasing regardless of authenticity) and wearing outrageously mediocre Western knock-offs of Indian style (Season 2 even has a yoga episode where she gets to roll her eyes) and last but not least, arguing in Hindi – more please; and the freakishly hilariousness of Campbell Scott as a German baron/duke/prince thing. OMG – his accent is ridiculous and sometimes he slips out of it and it is the weirdest most hypnotic thing about the show. It’s jarring and hints at “something nasty in the woodshed” and really enhances what is sometimes too bubblegum and broad to entertain me. I like tuning into Royal Pains but I wouldn’t want to own it. I liked it more in earlier episodes when I was dazzled by pretty Paolo and Reshma and enjoying the idea that a menschy NY Jewish Doctor was the main character but the biggest enthusiasm killer for me as I watched the episodes has been the scenes with the hospital administrator. It’s not the charm and bloom of a new relationship between two nice people – it’s boring and worth fast forwarding pass. And her clothes are ugly. This storyline killed the momentum of this series for me. Yes, the beach background is stunning but you can see similar scenes on Burn Notice and CSI: Miami. Beach real estate rocks, we know.

Agatha Christie’s Poirot: The Definitive Collection

June 15th, 2011

The quality of this collection of Poirot mysteries is better than anything I have ever seen in the realm of television production transfer to DVD. To say that the video quality is magnificent is an understatement. When I began watching these DVD’s I was immediately struck by the depth and richness of the color and the brilliant clarity of the images, right down to the finest detail. A&E deserves the highest praise for treating this collection like the masterpieces of cinematography they are. For people who are familiar with David Suchet’s brilliant portrayal of Hercule Poirot and the fine acting of Hugh Frasier as Poirot’s good natured friend and associate Captain Hastings and Pauline Moran as his dedicated secretary and friend Miss Lemon, it goes without saying that the quality of the acting is a mark of excellence throughout the world. Philip Jackson as Chief Inspector Japp of Scotland Yard rounds out the experience as these four great actors are like welcomed family members to the viewers who know the wonder of this fantastic series. This collection is something you will treasure forever. The only thing that I did not like is the way the DVD’s were packaged in the box. The box they come in is designed to hold all twelve DVD’s but in order to make the box reasonable in size the DVD’s are overlapped, two on each leaf of the box, one DVD on a full spindle and the one overlapping it on a half spindle. It makes it awkward to remove the DVD’s carefully from the leafs. I purchased 12 separate jewel cases for these DVD’s and I am storing them in the jewel cases rather than the box. It is a small price to pay for maintaining these equisitely high quality productions. I find that each of the twelve productions runs approximately 95 minutes including credits and opening. Whether you are a mystery fan or not, these video productions are wonderful to behold. Absolutely worth the investment. There is one thing, however, that I must caution you about. These productions are NOT for young viewers. Some of the scenes in these films are brutal enough to earn an “R” rating if they were shown in theaters today. For example, in the very first DVD, The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd, there is a scene in which his murder is depicted and it is a horrific scene. A knife is clearly rammed into the victim’s throat, firmly held there as blood pours out, and every agonizing twitch of his screaming death throes are displayed. It is enough to give even the most jaded person nightmares. So please exercise caution regarding allowing younger viewers to watch these films. I recommend no one younger than a teenager.

Breaking Bad – The Complete First Season

June 14th, 2011

People who wax philisophical about this being the Golden Age of television arent off in any way. Never before in my life have I been around so many solidly great shows airing at once. I’m not saying this is universal, because of course this is also the era of reality TV, but between The Wire, Dexter, Numb3rs, Lost, Californication, etc, etc, I’ve never before been as excited about what is possible with television as an entertainment media. I think we have far and away trumped movies as far as overall content and originality. Movies are all about the “remake” these days, but shows like Breaking Bad are about as original as you could possibly ask for.

I wont really get into too much thematic elements or subject items, because I dont want to spoil one second of this extremely brief Season 1, but Bryan Cranston absolutely hits it out of the park with his portrayal of “average middle class dad”. He plays it so numb, then breaks bad with such force…I honestly think this is one of the performances of the year. I’m not overstating this in any way, he’s phenomenal. He makes you so sympathetic to his plight that you really watch each episode absolutely rooting for him to best the challenging sitution he’s involved in. He’s the baddest nerd that ever was.

Give this TV show one episode, and you’ll be hooked, and go ahead and set aside another six hours to marathon the rest of the series. Its that good.
